In the J1 category of the 90+ kg weight class, Ilham Zakiyev lost to French competitor Jason Grandry in the quarterfinals. Despite this, he earned the right to participate in the repechage. Here, Zakiyev defeated Dutch athlete Daniel Knegt and secured a place in the bronze medal match.
Azerbaijan's representative also defeated Mongolia's Ganbat Dashtseren and claimed the 3rd place.
