African representative: $250 billion proposed for climate adaptation measures is extremely low

"Western leaders' absence from COP29 shows they are not interested in allocating funds for combating climate change," Bernard Mwinzi, Director of Communications for the African Group of Negotiators said, APA reports.

He added that developing countries must demonstrate a united stance on this issue.

"We cannot agree with the proposed $250 billion for climate adaptation measures, as this amount is extremely low. I would also like to emphasize that the Global North still does not fully comprehend the meaning of the climate crisis. Developing countries must adopt a united position on this issue, as financing is crucial for addressing climate change. I live in Nairobi, and I must say, the stance taken by the West on this matter greatly surprises me. Moreover, almost none of the Western leaders attended COP29, which indicates that they are not interested in allocating funds for measures to combat climate change. They fail to understand that this problem needs an urgent solution. This, along with their perception of allocated funds as a charity, is deeply disappointing. It is far from fair because the same issue could happen to their countries as well," Mwinzi emphasized.
